Art Route

If you want to do this route, we recommend that you opt for "El Paseo del Arte" which for €32 gives you access to the three museums for a year (only one visit per museum)

Stop 1: Museo del Prado

The most important art gallery in the country and one of the most impressive internationally, it boasts the most complete collections of artists such as Goya, Rubens, and Velázquez. Originally a royal heritage, the acquisition of works began with Charles V in the 16th century, but they were not put on public display until 1819 by the hand of Ferdinand VII thanks to the influence of his wife, Maria Isabel de Braganza. The museum stands out for its unique repertoire of paintings by the great Spanish, Flemish, and Italian masters of the 16th, 18th, and 19th centuries. An absolute must-see during your stay in Madrid.

Stop 2: Thyssen Museum - Bornemisza

The museum houses works from the late Middle Ages, through Italian primitives, the impressionism of Monet and Degas, and modern art, to American painting by Pollock, Kandinsky and Hopper. The collection, of private origin and belonging to the Thyssen family, dates back to 1871 with the acquisition of seven Rodin statues by August Thyssen. Today it belongs to the Spanish State and brings together key works from the Italian and German Renaissance, Dutch Baroque, Impressionism, the avant-garde, and post-World War II American art.

Stop 3: Reina Sofía Museum

Modern and contemporary art institution with a large collection of cubist, surrealist, and neo-figurative works by artists of the caliber of Picasso, Dalí, and Bacon. The museum was founded in 1990 with the aim of creating a center of contemporary art in Spain with international reach. Today it offers a space for past and contemporary artists to exhibit their art in a multitude of media, from painting and sculpture to film and performance.
